Caribbean

One of my favorite places on earth, and fortunately the subject of a recent trip to the Caribbean. Look for updates to the Travel portfolio section soon!

The runway in St. Barthelemy, French West Indies. On occasion I have been asked “why travel and food photography?” The short answer: Photographing food and travel images for businesses, brands and magazines allows me to combine three things which I am passionate about: eating, exploring and recording amazing experiences to share with others. The longer [...]

As a travel photographer, one of my favorite overlook’s within the Virgin Islands National Park is on the Cinnamon Bay Trail. This vista is well worth the climb, as you are able to take in all of Cinnamon Bay as well as Peter Bay. For a fun full day out one can hike the Cinnamon [...]

On a recent trip to Virgin Gorda, I was fortunate to have an entire day to spend within The Baths and Devil’s Bay. I had a great time photographing and studying the unique granite rock formations that dominate this coastal landscape. The granite boulders are attributed to the island’s volcanic origins. I have been to [...]

Spending the past year and a half doing travel photography in the Caribbean islands allows one to spend time on Cays.  A cay is a small typically uninhabited offshore island, many of the cays near St. John are perfect for a picnic day trip via kayak.  Cays are formed when when ocean currents transport lose [...]

Big game fishing is popular sport in the Virgin Islands and a day’s catch makes for some great cooking, with Mahi-Mahi and Yellowfin Tuna being perennial favorites. Though more difficult than shooting fish in a barrel, visitors often come to the Virgin Islands for the likelihood that they will catch the elusive Blue Marlin. As [...]

This shipwreck can be seen when taking the ferry from St. John to West End Tortola.  Shipwrecks are often left in place to eventually serve as artificial reefs and the British Virgin Islands has a history of shipwrecks the most famous being the RMS Rhone which serves up spectacular scuba dives for visitors.

This beautiful rental villa on Steele Point takes advantage of the location and the fact that Tortola has incredible views of the water and great boat access. As a photographer I really enjoy making images of island homes, I feel that collaborating with the builder and the client is a rewarding experience.

This beautiful classic sailboat was spotted off the coast of the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean last week. The Virgin Island chain offers world class sailing year round and is host to many prestigious races during the winter sailing season.

I always enjoy photographing for Asolare Restaurant, a food photography client who works hard to source local,  fresh,  yellowfin tuna for it’s innovative menu.

A great activity to do on the island of St. John is birdwatching, the path above is a trail which leads to a pond populated by many different types of birds.

More about the history of Mary’s Point (including historic photographs ) and it’s former owner Carl Emmanuel Francis can be found on the St. John Historical Society’s website

I am pleased to share with you an image of mine which is currently featured in American Airlines first class inflight magazine Celebrated Living. Celebrated Living chose St. Johnas a destination included in the “Craving the Caribbean” article on Winter travel. The photograph above of the delicious salmon canapé from Asolare restaurant was selected by [...]

Peace hill is one of my favorite spots on St. John, and a great place for a quick hike and a swim in nearby Denis Bay. From 1953 until hurricane Marylin swept through the island, there was a giant Christ of the Caribbean statue atop the hill. (The colonial era windmill in the linked photo [...]

This week I wished to share with you an image from St. Barthelemy in the French West Indies. It is currently part of a series being featured on Sundayed, a website devoted to provocative weekend reading. I felt this image to be particularly relevant to St. Barths, as the island is known for it’s heart [...]

This image is from the Land and Sea series, part of which was exhibited at McGuffey Art Center,  in Charlottesville Virginia last year. These images are from a variety of locations, though are tied together with the cool color palette utilized and the inclusion of a strong horizon line. The horizon line is a graphic [...]

Birdwatching is one of my favorite activities that easily accompanies photography. Living in close quarters with the Virgin Islands National Park affords many wonderful opportunities to see birdlife, and the waterfowl are my favorite. This Great Blue Heron was spotted while out photographing on the edge of Waterlemon beach. The call that a Heron gives [...]

St. John Carnival, U.S. Virgin Islands – Images by Kathryn Wagner

St. John recently celebrated Carnival throughout the streets of town. A carnival village is set up every year in Cruz Bay. West Indian food and drink is served to the beat of Caribbean music heard during nightly concerts. The festivities concluded with a show of fireworks, usually done near the Fourth of July, and …

Carnival is coming! An annual event held on the island of St. John happily coincides with the Fourth of July. The photo above was taken just before the Carnival parade last year. Scores of St. Johnians march in colorful costumes down the main street of Cruz Bay, and there is celebration all week. Coming from [...]

The laughing gulls are back in the islands. They observe a seasonal migratory schedule, though opposite from many humans here in the Virgin Islands. You know it is summer (or soon to be) when a flock of these bold seabirds approaches your boat in search of a treat. This avian creature followed us on our [...]
